Today, there are few large programs running globally, with the notable exceptions of the continued work of the ASM and that of the MSIT, the latter being a truly global network of Materials Scientists coordinated by MSI International in Stuttgart. The outcomes of the actions were quite diverse, but they did include two compendia of critically evaluated and thermodynamically assessed binary and ternary phase diagrams for materials involved in both conventional lead-free and high temperature lead-free soldering. Recently, two European Union COST Actions (COST 531 and COST MP0602) were initiated enabling essential networking of a number of European laboratories to work on alloy systems for conventional lead-free and high temperature lead-free solders. One way to circumvent this problem is to create a network of materials scientists in order to pool local resources and work toward a common aim. The effort required in producing compendia of critically assessed phase diagrams is substantial and requires a large amount of resources. It should be mentioned that such monographs were also prepared by individuals, such as Iron – Binary Phase Diagrams by Otrud Kubaschewski (1982). As previously discussed, the individual national programs were overseen by APDIC, to monitor standards and quality, and also to minimize any duplication. The Indian Institute of Metals had similar programs. Likewise, the Institute of Metals in the UK (presently IOM3) had programs publishing monographs such as Phase Diagrams of Ternary Gold Alloys edited by Prince, Raynor and Evans ( Prince et al., 1990). For example, ASM International was responsible for the publication of the Monograph Series on Alloy Phase Diagrams where each volume comprises phase diagrams relating to a specific element, for example, Phase Diagrams of Indium Alloys edited by White and Okamoto (1992). There are a number of notable compendia of phase diagrams focussed on specific elements or groups of systems. But arguably, of greater importance are monographs and compilations of critical evaluations. Individual phase diagram determinations are found in journals in the scientific literature (such as Journal of Alloys and Compounds, International Journal of Materials Research (formally Zeitschrift für Metallkunde), Journal of Phase Equilibria and Diffusion, CALPHAD).
